Pushing Tin, 1999. A comedy-drama film. Directed by Mike Newell. Starring John Cusak, Billy Bob Thornton, Angelina Jolie and Cate Blanchett.
The film centers on Nick “The Zone” Falzone (John Cusack), a cocky air traffic controller who quarrels over proving “who’s more of a man” with fellow employee Russell Bell (Billy Bob Thornton). Nick and his fellow air traffic controllers at New York TRACON pride themselves on their ability to handle the intense stress of being a controller for one of the busiest airspaces in the country, even boasting of the 50% drop-out rate for new additions to the staff who are unable to cope with the pressure. When the group is joined by the quiet and confident Russell Bell (Thornton), a veteran of TRACONs in the Western United States, the real competition begins, when they start competing for Bell’s emotionally unstable wife (Jolie.)
(On a personal note: such a classic film with an amazing cast. Filmed during their short-lived yet wild marriage, Billy Bob Thornton and Angelina Jolie are dramatic poetry together.)
